Some paintings begin with a clear vision. Others arrive through exploration, persistence, and a willingness to follow curiosity wherever it leads.
The Squiggles collection emerged from the latter.
What began as an experiment with color, movement, and mark-making slowly evolved into one of the most recognizable bodies of work in my studio. Layer by layer, line by line, these paintings became an exploration of rhythm, energy, and the beauty that can emerge when we stop trying to control every outcome.
At first glance, the paintings feel playful and spontaneous. Waves of looping, gestural marks dance across the surface in overlapping layers of color. But beneath that apparent simplicity lies a process built on patience, intuition, and countless hours of experimentation. Each painting is a record of decisions, discoveries, and moments of trust in the creative process.
The Squiggles are ultimately about embracing movement, possibility, and the idea that not everything beautiful needs to be perfectly planned.
Inspiration
The inspiration for the Squiggles collection came from years of searching for a visual language that felt completely my own.
As an abstract artist, I spent countless hours experimenting with different techniques, compositions, and approaches to mark-making. Some ideas worked. Many did not. Through that process of trial and error, I found myself repeatedly returning to simple, expressive lines that carried an unexpected sense of energy and personality.
Those lines gradually evolved into the squiggles that define this body of work.
What fascinates me about them is their ability to feel both structured and free at the same time. They move across the canvas like conversations, pathways, memories, or streams of thought. Sometimes they feel joyful and energetic. Other times they feel calm and meditative. Their meaning shifts depending on the viewer, the color palette, and even the season of life in which the work is encountered.
The collection is also inspired by the rhythms we experience every day. The winding paths our lives take. The unexpected turns. The moments that overlap, intersect, and build upon one another over time.
No journey is perfectly straight.
Neither are these lines.
And that is precisely the point.
Process
While the finished paintings often appear effortless, the process behind them is anything but simple.
Each piece begins with layers of acrylic paint applied across the canvas. Colors are built gradually, often through multiple sessions, creating depth, variation, and visual complexity beneath the surface. Some layers remain visible while others become partially obscured as new colors and marks are added.
This process of layering is essential to the work.
The underlying colors create a sense of history within the painting. They become evidence of the journey that brought the piece to its final form.
Once the foundation is established, the squiggles begin to emerge. Using brushes loaded with acrylic paint, I apply expressive looping marks that weave across the canvas. Some lines overlap. Others disappear beneath subsequent layers. New colors are introduced and adjusted until a sense of balance begins to develop.
There is no predetermined roadmap.
Instead, the painting unfolds through intuition and response.
I spend significant time evaluating the relationships between color, movement, density, and negative space. Every addition changes the overall rhythm of the composition. What appears spontaneous is actually the result of hundreds of small decisions made throughout the creative process.
The final painting captures both movement and stillness. Energy and restraint. Chaos and harmony.
