Field Notes
Field Notes is an ongoing body of work rooted in observation, intuition, and the quiet beauty that reveals itself when we slow down enough to notice. Inspired by nature, memory, changing seasons, and the emotional landscapes we all carry within us, this collection serves as a visual journal of moments both ordinary and profound. Each painting is a record of something seen, felt, remembered, or hoped for. A collection of personal notes gathered through color, texture, and mark-making.
The title Field Notes comes from the practice of documenting observations in nature. Botanists, naturalists, and explorers have long used field notes to record discoveries, patterns, and moments of significance. In much the same way, these paintings are my own observations, not of specific places, but of feelings, experiences, and the subtle ways the world around us shapes our inner lives. The floral forms that emerge throughout the collection are less about depicting flowers themselves and more about capturing what they represent: resilience, growth, beauty, connection, and renewal.
Each piece begins intuitively. Rather than working from sketches or predetermined compositions, I start with color, movement, and instinct. Layers of acrylic paint are built gradually across the canvas, creating a foundation that feels alive and full of possibility. Some passages are allowed to remain loose and atmospheric while others become more defined through line, texture, and repeated forms. The process is one of discovery. Much like walking through a garden and noticing new details with each visit, the painting slowly reveals itself over time.
As the layers develop, floral-inspired shapes begin to emerge naturally. They drift across the surface, overlap one another, and weave together in ways that mirror the interconnectedness found in nature. Gold leaf often finds its way into the work as well, catching the light and creating moments of quiet luminosity. These reflective elements serve as reminders that beauty is often found in unexpected places, sometimes hidden until the light reaches it just right.
At its heart, Field Notes explores the relationship between nature and emotional well-being. In a world that often feels fast, noisy, and uncertain, nature continues to offer lessons in patience, resilience, and hope. Gardens bloom after difficult winters. Wildflowers appear in unlikely places. Seasons change, and life continues to unfold. These recurring patterns inspire much of my work and remind me that growth is often happening beneath the surface, even when we cannot yet see it.
Created with acrylic paints, oil sticks, graphite, and occasional gold leaf on gallery-wrapped canvas, each painting contains numerous layers that contribute to its depth and complexity. Marks are added, obscured, and rediscovered throughout the process, creating surfaces that invite viewers to linger and uncover new details over time. The resulting works feel both energetic and contemplative, balancing movement with moments of stillness.
Collectors are often drawn to Field Notes because of the emotional atmosphere the paintings create within a space. The layered colors, organic forms, and sense of movement bring warmth and personality to interiors while remaining sophisticated and timeless. Rather than simply decorating a room, these works invite reflection and connection. They offer a sense of optimism without being simplistic, and a feeling of calm without losing their energy.
The collection resonates particularly with those who value beauty, creativity, and meaningful living. Many collectors tell me they see something different each time they spend time with a painting. New shapes emerge, colors shift throughout the day, and personal interpretations continue to evolve. I love that these works create space for individual stories and experiences to coexist within the same image.
Field Notes paintings work beautifully in a variety of interiors, from collected traditional homes to contemporary spaces seeking warmth and character. Larger works create striking focal points above fireplaces, sofas, or dining room buffets, while medium-sized pieces bring life to bedrooms, home offices, and entryways. Their layered palettes pair especially well with neutral interiors, natural materials, vintage furnishings, and spaces that embrace a sense of comfort and authenticity.
More than anything, Field Notes is an invitation to pay attention. To notice the small moments, the fleeting beauty, and the quiet signs of growth that surround us every day. It is a reminder that even in uncertain seasons, there is still color, light, and possibility waiting to be found. Each painting serves as a record of those discoveries, a collection of observations gathered along the way, and an offering of hope, beauty, and connection for the homes they inhabit.
